Kolkata Shivers: Fog Dips Temps Below 20°C Amidst Cold Winds
5 Jan
Summary
- Kolkata's maximum temperature dropped to 19.2°C due to persistent fog and cold winds.
- This marks the third time this week the maximum temperature fell below 20°C.
- Meteorologists expect temperatures to dip further, signaling continued cold conditions.

Kolkata experienced a day of intense cold on Sunday, with persistent fog and a biting wind causing the maximum temperature to plummet to 19.2°C. This significant drop, over four degrees from Saturday's 23.4°C, was accompanied by a minimum temperature of 14.9°C. The dense fog played a crucial role, narrowing the temperature difference between day and night to just 4.3°C, the second time this gap has fallen below 5 degrees within the week.
The meteorological office forecasts a further decrease in temperatures, signaling a revival of cold conditions throughout Kolkata and much of south Bengal. This weather pattern is attributed to a combination of factors: a western disturbance over northwestern states that has slowed the advance of dry, cold winds, and a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh increasing moisture levels. This led to extensive fog and low cloud cover throughout the day, keeping the sun's warmth at bay.
