Kerala sizzles: Temperatures soar past 38°C!
12 Mar
Summary
- Temperatures in Kerala have exceeded 38°C in recent days.
- Heat index is expected to rise due to high temperatures and humidity.
- Eight stations reported high UV index, issuing an orange alert.

Kerala is currently experiencing a significant rise in temperatures, with mercury levels surpassing 38°C in locations such as Kannur and Kottayam over the past few days. This heat is intensified by high relative humidity, leading to an elevated heat index, making the conditions feel even hotter.
The upward temperature trend is projected to continue through the remainder of March and into April. Maximum temperatures are anticipated to approach 40°C in many parts of north and central Kerala. With forecasts indicating reduced summer rainfall, the days are expected to become progressively warmer.
The India Meteorological Department noted that while summer had been moderate initially, the transition to peak heat is underway ahead of the spring equinox. This period brings intense solar radiation as the sun aligns directly over the equator.
Currently, the possibility of summer rains is considered remote due to a lack of moisture-laden winds. Clear skies will allow more sunlight to heat the ground, while humidity will contribute to a higher heat index, especially in areas exceeding 37°C with over 60% humidity.
In response to these conditions, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority issued an orange alert for eight stations reporting high UV index levels. Residents are strongly advised to limit direct sun exposure during peak hours to mitigate risks of heat-related ailments and skin damage.
