Kashmir Shivers: March Snowfall Returns After Warmest Feb
19 Mar
Summary
- Kashmir Valley experienced a significant temperature drop due to wet weather.
- Fresh snowfall occurred in Gulmarg and Sonamarg on Wednesday.
- The meteorological department predicted erratic weather until March 20.

Wet weather has brought a noticeable chill back to the Kashmir Valley, causing temperatures to plummet. On Wednesday, Gulmarg and Sonamarg experienced fresh snowfall, further lowering the mercury across the region. This recent cold snap is a stark contrast to February, which saw Srinagar record its warmest month on history, with temperatures soaring significantly above the usual for that time of year.
The meteorological department has forecast "erratic weather" conditions persisting until March 20. Rain lashed the plains, including Srinagar, while snowfall at Pir Ki Gali on the Mughal Road led to its closure. Tourists in Gulmarg expressed surprise at encountering snow in March, enjoying the unexpected wintery landscape.
Looking ahead, the forecast indicates a continuation of cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rain or snowfall. Higher reaches in the Chenab Valley and south Kashmir might receive moderate to heavy snowfall. However, weather conditions are expected to improve between March 21 and 25, with generally dry weather anticipated. The department has issued advisories for travelers using higher routes between March 18 and 20 due to potential heavy precipitation, strong winds, and isolated hailstorms, also urging farmers to suspend operations.
