Srinagar endured its coldest night of the winter on Friday, with the mercury plummeting to -6 degrees Celsius, leading to the partial freezing of Dal Lake. The day's temperature, however, settled at a milder 10.8 degrees Celsius. This intense cold wave, predicted to persist across the Valley for several more days, has caused water bodies, taps, and pipes to freeze.
Other areas in Kashmir also experienced extreme lows. Shopian recorded -7.7°C, Gulmarg -7.2°C, and Pahalgam -7.6°C overnight. While Ladakh's Drass was the coldest at -24.6°C, Leh and Kargil registered -14.4°C and -13.2°C respectively. Despite the frigid nights, Srinagar and other towns in the region are still awaiting their first significant snowfall of the season.
In contrast, Himachal Pradesh is expected to see dry weather and a rise in maximum temperatures. The India Meteorological Department forecasts this trend until January 15, with a gradual increase of 2-3 degrees Celsius in daytime temperatures over the next five days. However, minimum temperatures are expected to remain low, with Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti recording -10.8°C, the state's lowest.
