Jersey Shatters May Temperature Record Amid UK Heatwave
24 May
Summary
- Jersey recorded its hottest May day ever at 29.2C.
- UK heatwave conditions continue, with temperatures potentially reaching 33C.
- Heat poses risks, prompting warnings about cold water shock and wildfires.

Jersey experienced its hottest May day on record as an early summer heatwave enveloped the Channel Islands and much of the UK. Temperatures in St Helier reached 29.2C, breaking the 2003 record of 28.9C. This event coincides with sunny bank holiday weather across southern England, where some locations have already met heatwave criteria.
The Met Office forecasts a further increase in temperatures, with predictions of 33C for Jersey on Monday. A yellow heat health alert is active across the South West, advising caution for vulnerable individuals and potential strain on health services.
Concerns have been raised regarding cold water shock due to the still-cold sea temperatures. Fire services are advising against barbecues in the countryside because of the heightened risk of wildfires. The UK's national May temperature record is also expected to be broken soon, with the current record standing at 32.8C from 1944.
