Ireland Gripped by Cold Snap: Rain, Sleet, and Snow Warnings Issued
14 Feb
Summary
- A rain warning is active for eight Irish counties amid plunging temperatures.
- Dublin is monitoring river and canal water levels due to recent flooding.
- Showers could turn to sleet or snow, causing travel difficulties and poor visibility.

A nationwide low temperature warning expired on Saturday morning, but a Status Yellow rain-snow warning is now active for eight counties across the island of Ireland until midnight. This alert affects Cavan, Donegal, Longford, and all five counties in Connacht. Met Eireann has warned that showers may transition to sleet or snow, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions and impairing visibility.
In Dublin, water levels in rivers and canals are under close observation. Weeks of heavy rainfall have already caused flooding in parts of the capital, impacting homes and roads. Dublin City Council confirmed it is monitoring surface water levels, particularly along the River Liffey near Chapelizod, and collaborating with Waterways Ireland regarding heightened levels in the Grand Canal. Priority routes are being gritted, though the public is advised of potential travel disruptions and hazardous driving conditions.
