India Reels: 19 of World's Hottest Spots Erupt
22 Apr
Summary
- India records 19 of the 20 hottest locations globally.
- Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius.
- Record heat is linked to solar heating and reduced snow cover.

India is grappling with an extreme heat surge, with data revealing that 19 of the world's 20 hottest locations are currently within the country. Heatwave conditions are forecast to persist from April 22 to April 24, with maximum temperatures potentially reaching 43 degrees Celsius. Cities in Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh have seen temperatures touch 44 degrees Celsius, with only Lumbini in Nepal appearing in the top 20 list.
The widespread heat is attributed to several atmospheric factors. Intense solar heating, exacerbated by clear skies, has rapidly elevated surface temperatures. A deficit in winter snow cover across Eurasia and the Himalayas means less sunlight is reflected, intensifying warming over India. Changing ocean patterns, including rising sea surface temperatures in the Pacific, have also weakened cooling systems, allowing heat to accumulate over land masses.
This phenomenon is further intensified by dry northwesterly winds that suppress cloud formation, while southern and northeastern India experience moisture and thunderstorms. Experts warn that the clustering of extreme temperatures signifies increasing climate variability and the growing intensity of heatwaves. Significant pre-monsoon relief is not expected in the immediate coming weeks, indicating continued heat stress across large parts of the country.
