Rain Cools India: Heatwave Subdued, Uttarakhand Faces Disruption
1 Jun
Summary
- Delhi experienced a significant temperature drop, reaching 4.2 degrees Celsius below normal.
- Western disturbance activity is causing rain and thunderstorms across northwest India.
- Uttarakhand faced disruptions due to heavy rainfall, temporarily halting the Kedarnath Yatra.

Northwest India, including the national capital, experienced a substantial temperature decrease on Sunday, with Delhi recording a maximum of 35.8 degrees Celsius, a 4.2-degree drop from the usual. This cooler weather is attributed to rain and thunderstorm activity fueled by an active western disturbance influencing Rajasthan and central Pakistan.
Across several states, overcast skies and scattered rainfall kept mercury levels subdued, leading the India Meteorological Department to declare an abatement of heatwave conditions nationwide. The IMD also forecast moderate to severe thunderstorms with wind speeds up to 90 kmph over northwest, central, and adjoining eastern India, alongside the potential advance of the northwest monsoon into Kerala and Tamil Nadu within three to four days.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand encountered adverse weather, with heavy downpours leading to temporary disruptions. The Kedarnath Yatra was suspended briefly due to the severe conditions, stranding hundreds of pilgrims before being resumed as the weather improved.
