Monsoon Arrives: India Braces for Heavy Rains & Heatwaves

Widespread rainfall is anticipated across southern India, including Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, and Lakshadweep, with Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal also expecting rain. Delhi, however, is forecast to experience light rain, thunderstorms, and dust storms on Friday, June 19, accompanied by strong winds. Maximum temperatures in the capital are expected to range between 40°C and 42°C.
Heavy rainfall is projected for Northeast India and the eastern Himalayan region, with Assam and Meghalaya bracing for very heavy showers. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also under a very heavy rainfall warning, increasing the risk of localized flooding and landslides. Bihar faces a heavy rainfall warning through Friday, with predictions of thundersqualls reaching up to 80 kmph.
Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in parts of central India, specifically East Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Hot and humid weather is likely in Odisha, Konkan, Goa, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema. The southwest monsoon's progress remains slow, but conditions are favorable for its advance into Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh over the next four to five days.
