A deep depression currently over the northwest Bay of Bengal is projected to make landfall on Monday, July 27, between the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal. This weather system is expected to bring significant rainfall, with predictions of heavy to extremely heavy showers over Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
Gangetic West Bengal is also anticipated to receive very heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the depression is likely to intensify before crossing the coast. This event is supported by the active monsoon trough and other weather systems, promising widespread rain.
Beyond heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected in numerous regions. Wind speeds of 40-60 kmph are forecast for areas like Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar. The IMD has also warned of rough to very rough sea conditions along the coast, advising fishermen to stay clear of the affected waters until July 29.
Authorities have issued advisories regarding potential flash floods, particularly in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, and warned of disruptions to transport, possible landslides, and damage to infrastructure. Active monsoon conditions are expected to persist throughout the week, with heavy rain continuing in many states until August 1.
