Northwest India is bracing for significant weather disturbances, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds expected between May 11 and May 14. This alert is associated with an approaching western disturbance.
Scattered rainfall and snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and winds up to 60 kmph, are predicted for Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during this period. Hailstorms are also possible in Jammu & Kashmir on May 11-12 and in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on May 12-13. The wet weather may extend to the plains, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, from May 12 to 14.
In stark contrast, southern coastal regions, specifically Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and Karaikal, are on alert for isolated heavy rainfall over the next seven days, with very heavy rain anticipated on May 14 and 15. Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea.
Elsewhere, thundersqualls with winds up to 70 kmph are expected across Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Bihar. Isolated hailstorms have been forecast for Bihar and Jharkhand on Saturday. While these regions experience stormy weather, heatwave conditions will persist in West Rajasthan for the next seven days and in Gujarat until May 14. The highest temperature recorded was 44.8°C in Rajasthan, and temperatures across northwest and central India are projected to rise by an additional 3-5°C in the coming week.
