India's Weather Overhauled by Intense Western Disturbances
29 Mar
Summary
- Western disturbances amplified by Mediterranean cyclonic systems are impacting India.
- Widespread rain, thunderstorms, and hail are expected across many regions.
- Temperatures are being prevented from rising to dangerous levels by the storms.

Intense western disturbances, amplified by Mediterranean cyclonic systems known as medicanes, are currently shaping India's weather. These powerful systems are bringing significant disruption across North-West and Central India, characterized by widespread rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning, and hail. Crucially, this active weather phase is preventing temperatures from climbing to dangerous levels in affected regions.
Forecasters predict that this spell of rain and thunderstorms could persist across Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, and South-West Uttar Pradesh until around April 16. While there may be a brief lull, activity is expected to revive towards April 27. The India Meteorological Department has identified an active western disturbance originating from north Iran, with another expected by Thursday.
Multiple atmospheric features are contributing to this active weather pattern, including cyclonic circulations and troughs across various parts of the country. Moisture-laden winds from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are feeding these systems, intensifying the conditions and leading to the current widespread severe weather.
