Monsoon Nears: India Braces for Below-Normal Rains
30 May
Summary
- India forecasts below-normal monsoon with 90% of long-period average rainfall.
- El Nino conditions likely to cause below-normal monsoon in Odisha.
- Rajasthan continues to face extreme heat; northern states expect rain.

India is preparing for the upcoming monsoon season, with many states experiencing a drop in maximum temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius. Despite the approaching rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected a below-normal southwest monsoon for the country. This season, rainfall is expected to be around 90% of the long-period average, influenced by El Nino conditions.
Northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are forecast to receive rain and thunderstorms. In contrast, Rajasthan is still grappling with intense heat, with temperatures in the mid-40s, although some rainfall activity is anticipated from Friday. The monsoon is expected to reach Kerala within the next seven days.
Odisha is specifically predicted to experience below-normal rainfall during the June-September monsoon period due to El Nino. While north and western Odisha may see less rain, southern and central parts could receive normal to above-normal precipitation. Hot and humid conditions are expected to persist in several coastal districts, with an orange warning issued for thunderstorms and high winds in western districts.
