Illinois Braces for Heatwave Thunderstorms

A period of intense heat is anticipated across portions of north central and northeast Illinois, and northwest Indiana, leading up to anticipated severe thunderstorms. Temperatures are forecast to reach the high 80s and low 90s throughout the week. Current conditions reported at O'Hare International Airport include rain, fog, and mist at 73 degrees, while Midway Airport is overcast at 75 degrees.

Starting Tuesday, a low risk of thunderstorms exists, with the potential for damaging winds up to 65 mph and hail up to a half dollar in size. The risk elevates significantly from Wednesday through Thursday, with multiple rounds of severe weather predicted. Officials emphasize that Thursday poses the greatest risk for severe weather. Additionally, there is a possibility of flooding in certain areas as these storms develop.
