A significant ice storm is developing across the region, prompting the issuance of an Ice Storm Warning for the first time in two decades. Freezing rain and sleet began early this morning, with some areas already reporting a tenth of an inch of ice. Temperatures remain brutally cold, hovering in the teens and low 20s throughout the day.
A steadier and potentially heavy band of freezing rain is forecast for the afternoon and evening. This could push total ice accumulation to a half inch or more, significantly increasing the risk of widespread power outages. Travel is strongly discouraged for the entire day due to the dangerous conditions.
While temperatures may briefly rise above freezing overnight, they are not expected to be high enough for significant melting. A more substantial thaw is anticipated on Monday afternoon, with temperatures reaching near 40 degrees and full sun expected to melt most of the ice. However, any remaining moisture on roads could refreeze rapidly Monday evening as temperatures plummet into the teens.
