On Thursday evening, Hyderabad was hit by an intense spell of rain that lasted several hours, bringing the city to a grinding halt. The downpour, which began around 4:30 pm and continued throughout the evening, turned the roads into streams and caused chaos on the streets.
Vehicles moved bumper to bumper on major roads such as Khairatabad, Punjagutta, Banjara Hills, Gachibowli, and Jubilee Hills, with motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, struggling to navigate waist-deep water in some low-lying areas. Commuters reported being stuck in traffic for over two hours for journeys that usually take just 25 minutes.
The sudden rain also caused power outages in parts of the city, with some residents left without electricity for nearly three hours. The Hyderabad traffic police and emergency teams were on high alert, working to clear waterlogged areas, broken wires, and fallen trees. Around 18 trees were reported to have been felled in various locations, and 250 electricity complaints were received, with 149 resolved promptly.
Despite the efforts of the authorities, the situation remained chaotic, with residents expressing frustration at the recurring problems caused by heavy rain in the city. The Hyderabad traffic police stated that the worst traffic jam occurred in the IT corridor as the rain started around the time when people were leaving work.
