Hong Kong Shatters Heat Record Amid Typhoon Dolphin

Hong Kong has officially recorded its highest temperature since records began in 1884, reaching 36.9C on Sunday. This new record was influenced by Typhoon Dolphin, which has been directing warm air towards the city. The previous record of 36.6C was set on August 22, 2017, shortly before Typhoon Hato impacted the region.

While official readings were taken at the observatory, temperatures elsewhere in Hong Kong surpassed this figure, with Sheung Shui logging 39.8C. The Hong Kong Observatory issued a "very hot weather warning," urging residents to take precautions against the heat. Typhoon Dolphin made landfall in China's Zhejiang province on Sunday evening, with significant wind speeds.

Scientists note that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events globally.
