Holiday Travel Alert: Ice Storm Looms

Weather conditions are set to deteriorate significantly by Friday afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for hazardous travel for those in areas north and east of Pittsburgh. A system is expected to produce steady rain, with the possibility of freezing rain developing. Ice accumulation could be substantial in Armstrong and Indiana counties, as well as higher elevations of Westmoreland and Fayette counties, making travel east into central Pennsylvania treacherous.

Following a brief respite on Saturday, another system is predicted to arrive by late Sunday, bringing additional rainfall. However, a more dramatic shift in weather is expected as the year concludes. Temperatures are forecasted to approach 60 degrees by the weekend's end before a sharp drop early next week.

This significant temperature crash will usher in a much colder pattern to round out 2025. Residents are advised to monitor forecasts closely, especially for travel plans around the holiday and the end of the year. The period leading up to Christmas Day itself, however, will see mild temperatures and partly sunny skies.
