Dangerous Heat Dome Looms: 115-Degree Heat Index Expected

A dangerous heat wave, driven by a phenomenon known as a heat dome, is predicted to affect large portions of the United States, with Tennessee notably impacted starting June 28. This high-pressure system will trap warm air, leading to extreme temperatures and humidity.

Forecasters anticipate heat indices ranging from 100 to 110 degrees, and potentially up to 115 degrees in some areas. Overnight low temperatures are expected to remain in the 70s, offering minimal respite from the day's heat. This period of extreme heat is projected to continue through the Independence Day holiday weekend, with conditions persisting until approximately July 6.

In Tennessee, triple-digit heat indices are anticipated from Sunday onward, with mid-state areas expecting daily highs in the mid to upper 90s through at least Friday next week. The National Weather Service has indicated that parts of Middle and West Tennessee could experience extreme heat, posing significant health risks.

Authorities advise caution, as prolonged exposure to such extreme temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that over 700 deaths occur annually in the U.S. due to extreme heat, with vulnerable populations like older adults and young children being at higher risk.
