Hawaii Faces Tropical Threat: Rain, Floods Loom
25 Oct
Summary
- A tropical system is heading towards Hawaii.
- Heavy rain and flash flooding are possible from Monday night.
- The storm approaches from an unusual western direction.
Hawaii is under a developing tropical threat as a system in the central Pacific tracks eastward. Forecasters predict heavy rain, flash flooding, and possible mudslides from Monday night through Thursday, October 28. This disturbance has a medium chance of strengthening into a tropical depression or storm, potentially named Olana.
The system's approach from the west is particularly concerning, as it could direct moisture onto south- and west-facing slopes that typically remain dry. This unique trajectory differs from the usual trade wind patterns. Even if the system doesn't fully develop, several inches of rain are expected over two to three days, potentially disrupting travel and outdoor activities.
This comes after an unusually active storm season for Hawaii in 2026, which has already seen multiple named storms. Another system could also develop west of Hawaii around Halloween, potentially extending rainy weather into early November.
