The Hawaiian Islands are facing a continued threat from an active Pacific hurricane season. This year, two hurricanes have already passed in close proximity to the state. Currently, Tropical Storm Norbert, which formed in the eastern Pacific on September 10, 2026, is moving westward in the general direction of Hawaii, though it is still over 2,000 miles away.
Forecasters express significant uncertainty about Norbert's precise track and timing, but it could approach the islands late in the week. Additionally, a separate area of disturbed weather southwest of Mexico is showing potential for development into a tropical depression. This system is expected to form by early next week and, if named, would be called Odalys.
Meanwhile, the Atlantic basin remains remarkably quiet, with no tropical cyclone formation expected in the next seven days, largely due to El Niño's influence. Hawaii's National Weather Service anticipates only increased humidity and showers from a weak disturbance near the islands around September 15 or 16, giving it only a 20% chance of developing further.
