Hawaii Floods: Record Rain Devastates Islands
25 Mar
Summary
- Storm system brought catastrophic flooding across Hawaii islands.
- Damage from recent storms is estimated to exceed $1 billion.
- Hana, Maui recorded over 40 inches of rain, a new record.

Hawaii has been battered by a series of storm systems since February, leading to an unusually wet period that has caused extensive devastation. The total damage from these storms is estimated to be at least $1 billion, according to Governor Josh Green. The island of Maui experienced significant downpours on Tuesday morning, with roadways flooding in the eastern part of the island.
This recent rainfall is part of one of the rainiest periods in Hawaii's recent memory. The town of Hana on Maui's eastern coast has recorded over 40 inches of rain since February 1st, marking the highest amount ever measured in that timeframe. Meanwhile, the weather gauge at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu has recorded nearly 16 inches of rain, making it the fourth-rainiest period since records began in 1941. While flood watches are still in effect for parts of Maui and the Big Island, sunshine is returning to Oahu and Kauai as the storm system is expected to leave the region completely by Wednesday.
