Hawaii Flooded Again: New Storm Threatens More Deluge

Hawaii is preparing for renewed flooding as a storm system is expected to deliver five to 12 inches of rain across the islands from Wednesday through Friday. A flood watch has been issued for all islands, with downpours already beginning on Kauai. Meteorologists warn of potential overflowing streams, road closures, landslides, and the necessity for evacuations.

This forecast comes as Hawaii grapples with an unusually wet period since February, marked by two powerful storms in March. These earlier events caused soggy hillsides to collapse, inundated homes, and led to significant damage in areas like Maui and the Big Island. Residents in Waialua on Oahu were forced to evacuate, and emergency crews rescued over 200 people. Some communities are still recovering from the March floods.

The approaching storm is predicted to bring moderate to heavy showers, initially affecting Kauai and Oahu before spreading statewide. It may also include thunderstorms and strong winds, with rainfall rates potentially reaching two to four inches per hour in some locations, increasing flood risks. Additionally, a winter storm watch is in effect for the Big Island's highest peaks, with chances of freezing rain and snow.
