A powerful storm system unleashed giant 14cm hailstones across Brisbane overnight, leaving a trail of destruction. The rare "giant hail" caused extensive damage to vehicles, homes, and solar infrastructure.
Wind gusts of 100kph and over 800,000 lightning strikes accompanied the storm, leading to the downfall of 600 power lines. As a result, 162,000 properties lost electricity at the storm's peak, with many still without power on Tuesday morning.
Beyond power disruptions, the wild weather severely impacted transport and education. Rail services across southeast Queensland faced major delays due to blocked tracks from fallen trees and power lines. Eleven schools were forced to close for repairs, and numerous others experienced technological outages.
