Georgia is currently grappling with one of its most severe spring droughts on record. The state is in desperate need of precipitation, particularly in its southern and coastal regions. Wildfires have been actively burning for over a week, consuming tens of thousands of acres of dry land and prompting significant evacuations.
The upcoming weekend is expected to bring rain to Georgia, offering some relief from the dry conditions. However, forecasts indicate that this rainfall will not be sufficient to end the widespread drought. Approximately 1 to 4 inches of rain are predicted, with the heaviest amounts falling in Texas and Louisiana.
To overcome the current drought, Georgia requires nearly a foot of rain. Currently, 98% of the state is classified under severe drought or worse, with one-fifth in exceptional drought. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division declared a statewide Drought Response Level 1 in April 2026, initiating public information campaigns to encourage water conservation.
