Schools across Gautam Budh Nagar, including board-recognised, aided, unaided, and government institutions, remained closed on January 16 and 17. This directive, based on instructions from district magistrate Medha Roopam, aimed to protect students from hazardous dense fog conditions. Despite the closure for students, teachers and non-teaching staff were mandated to be present. The region experienced a minimum temperature of 6.3 degrees Celsius, with forecasts indicating further drops and extremely poor visibility.
Residents described perilous driving conditions in the early morning hours, with thick fog enveloping residential areas, roads, and expressways. Parents welcomed the holiday, emphasizing the safety risks associated with children commuting in such weather. Weather experts attributed the dense fog to evolving synoptic conditions over north India, including a western disturbance impacting the western Himalayas.
