France Swelters: Heatwave Sparks School Closures, Paris Transport Warning

France is bracing for its hottest day of the current heatwave, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 43C in western areas. This extreme weather has led to the issuance of France's highest heat warning across half the country, a measure not seen since the deadly 2003 heatwave.

Hundreds of schools across France have been closed, and many others are modifying teaching hours to mitigate the impact of scorching indoor temperatures. Concerns are mounting about the safety of children in classrooms that can exceed 32C, while public amenities remain air-conditioned.

The heatwave is also severely impacting public transport. Authorities in Paris have urged residents to stay home due to expected disruptions on public transport, as railway lines are vulnerable to temperatures above 50C. Train carriages may also prove insufficient for commuters during peak hours amid 40C heat.

This event marks France's second heatwave this year, a trend scientists link to global warming. They caution that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, longer, and more intense due to the burning of fossil fuels. Historical data shows a significant increase in heatwaves since 2000.
