Heatwave & World Cup: Ambulance Service Braces for Surge
23 Jun
Summary
- Ambulance service anticipates a surge in calls due to extreme heat and football.
- A red extreme heat warning is in effect for parts of England until Thursday.
- Public urged to use 111 or pharmacists for non-emergencies to ease pressure.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service is preparing for an increased volume of emergency callouts as extreme heat conditions coincide with England's World Cup matches. This follows a period during the May bank holiday when the service experienced over 3,500 emergency calls daily, a 30% increase on normal figures.
With temperatures predicted to reach as high as 40C and a red extreme heat warning issued by the Met Office for parts of southern England, Midlands, and south-east Wales, similar demand is expected. This warning is scheduled to be in effect from Wednesday morning until Thursday evening.
The service is urging the public to reserve 999 calls strictly for emergencies to manage the anticipated surge. For non-emergency medical advice or concerns, individuals are recommended to contact the NHS 111 service or consult a community pharmacist. Football fans are also advised to take precautions such as staying hydrated with water and soft drinks and ensuring safe journeys home.
