The National Climate Center confirmed El Nino began developing in May and entered a strong phase in July, with a high probability of becoming a super El Nino.
China is already experiencing a challenging climate with extreme heat, significant flooding, and an active typhoon season. Experts explain that El Nino acts as a global climate multiplier, increasing the likelihood of such weather extremes. During El Nino's development phase in summer, the western North Pacific typically sees more tropical cyclones, leading to a higher chance of strong typhoons making landfall along China's coasts.
Currently, parts of eastern and northeastern China are enduring oppressive heat, with temperatures forecast to exceed 40 C in some isolated areas. Simultaneously, heavy rainfall persists across vast regions, with Heilongjiang province breaking daily rainfall records and prompting flood alerts along the Songhua River. Heavy rain is also anticipated in several other key regions across the country.
Looking ahead, global average temperatures are expected to remain at or near record highs through 2030. The full global warming influence of a strong El Nino typically peaks a year or more after its maximum intensity due to a delayed oceanic and atmospheric response. This lag is a key factor leading experts to predict that 2027 will set new global temperature records.
