Easter Travel Chaos: Roads, Rails & Airports to See Major Disruption
21 Mar
Summary
- Major travel disruption expected across South East roads, railways, and airports.
- Numerous roadworks and railway maintenance projects are scheduled during the break.
- Gatwick Airport anticipates its busiest days on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Monday.

The South East region is preparing for a period of significant travel disruption over the upcoming Easter break. Both roads and railways are expected to experience heavy traffic and congestion, with substantial numbers of travelers anticipated at Gatwick Airport and the Port of Dover.
Term time for some schools concludes on March 27, with others finishing on April 2, ahead of the bank holiday weekend. Roadworks are ongoing in several locations, including East Sussex, West Sussex, and Kent, with specific closures affecting routes like The Ridge West, Worth Park Avenue, Balcombe Road, and Tourney Road. UK Power Networks and South East Water also have ongoing projects impacting Marlborough Road and Chapel Lane respectively.
Railway services will also see considerable disruption, particularly over the Easter weekend. Buses will replace trains on various routes, including between Herne Bay and Ramsgate, Eastbourne and Hastings/Ore, and Orpington and Tonbridge. Further rail replacement services are scheduled for routes around Ashford International, London Waterloo, and Brighton.
Engineers will be busy installing new track at Margate station and conducting repairs on a railway bridge in Broadstairs. Maintenance and drainage works are also planned for Hildenborough, affecting lines prone to flooding. Gatwick Airport predicts its peak travel days to be Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday, with Barcelona, Malaga, and Alicante being the most popular destinations.
