Delhi-NCR Braces for Intense Rainfall and Temperature Drops

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) will be impacted by a strong western disturbance prevailing across northwest India from October 8 onwards. The weather agency has issued a yellow alert for multiple spells of light to moderate rain across the city on October 8 and 9.

The upcoming rainfall is expected to have a significant impact on Delhi's weather. With just five days into the month, Delhi's October rain is already in "excess", with the Safdarjung weather station recording 51.8mm so far - over three times the monthly normal of 15.1mm. The expected showers on October 8 and 9 will further add to this total, pushing the rainfall closer to 100mm this month.

In addition to the heavy rains, the cold northwesterly winds will lead to a drop in minimum temperature from October 10 onwards. The minimum temperature, which currently stands at 24.2°C (two degrees above normal), is forecast to fall to around 20°C by October 10 as the cooler winds blow in from the mountains.

The weather system is expected to have a cooling effect on Delhi's maximum temperature as well, with the mercury dipping from 34.1°C on October 6 to around 28°C on October 8. The upper Himalayas may also see some snowfall, while other parts of the region are likely to experience rain and hailstorms.
