Delhi Weather: Sudden Storms Ground Flights, Drop Temps
19 Mar
Summary
- At least 22 flights were diverted due to strong winds and wind shear.
- Temperatures plummeted by 10°C in just one hour due to sudden rainfall.
- Air quality improved to 'poor' from 'moderate' due to favorable weather.

Sudden adverse weather conditions impacted Delhi, leading to at least 22 flight diversions by 9 PM on Wednesday. Strong wind shear made landings challenging, contributing to over 300 flight delays. The rapid weather change, attributed to an active western disturbance, brought winds up to 68 km/hour and light to moderate rainfall in several parts of the city between 6:30 PM and 8 PM.
The intense winds caused a significant temperature drop, with readings falling by approximately 10°C in just one hour. For instance, Safdarjung recorded a drop from 29°C to 19°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Thursday and Friday, forecasting more rain and gusty winds, with maximum temperatures expected to remain below 32°C.
This weather change has provided relief from unusually high March temperatures, which had reached 36.8°C earlier in the month. The minimum temperature also saw a dip. Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality remained in the 'poor' category, but an improving trend and favorable forecasts led the Commission for Air Quality Management to decide against invoking Stage-1 of the graded response action plan.
