Delhi Drenched: Hail and Rain Drop Temperatures to Record Lows
26 Oct
Summary
- Delhi's minimum temperature dropped to 17°C, the lowest of the season.
- Isolated hailstorms and thunderstorms occurred across parts of Delhi.
- Air quality improved significantly, moving into the 'moderate' category.
Overnight rain and hail showers in Delhi brought the minimum temperature down to 17°C on Sunday, marking the lowest point of the season so far. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this event was influenced by a feeble western disturbance and moisture from the Arabian Sea, causing thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated hailstorms in several areas.
The city recorded rainfall at multiple weather stations, with Safdarjung logging 4.4mm. This weather system also contributed to an improvement in air quality, with the 24-hour AQI dropping to 153, categorized as 'moderate', a noticeable improvement from the previous day.
The IMD forecasts a further decrease in minimum temperatures in the upcoming days, potentially reaching 15-17°C. Another period of light rainfall is expected around October 29-30. However, the Air Quality Early Warning System predicts Delhi's air quality might fall back into the 'poor' category on Monday and potentially remain so through October 28.
