Delhi Schools Ring 'Water Bells' Amid Severe Heatwave
22 Apr
Summary
- Schools in Delhi mandated to ring 'water bells' every 45-60 minutes.
- The city faces heatwave conditions with predicted temperatures of 41-44C.
- Students will also participate in a 'buddy system' for mutual well-being.

As New Delhi braces for a severe heatwave, schools in the capital have received a directive to ring 'water bells' at regular intervals.
The city education directorate has instructed schools to ring bells every 45 to 60 minutes, serving as a reminder for students to stay hydrated.
This measure comes as forecasts predict temperatures to soar to 41-44C later in the week, following a recent high of 49.2C in May 2024. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the region.
In addition to the 'water bell' initiative, schools are advised to minimize outdoor activities, conduct hydration awareness sessions, and curtail assemblies in shaded or indoor areas. A 'buddy system' will also be implemented, pairing students to monitor each other's physical well-being during school hours.
