Delhi Drenched: Rain Dips Temp, Disrupts Capital
17 Oct
Summary
- Rainfall significantly lowered Delhi's maximum temperature by nearly five degrees below normal.
- Waterlogging caused traffic congestion at multiple key locations across the capital.
- Air quality improved to the moderate category following the showers.
Rain brought a noticeable chill to Delhi on Thursday, October 17, 2026, with the maximum temperature at Safdarjung dropping to 28.3°C, significantly below the seasonal average. Significant rainfall was recorded across various weather stations, with Lodhi Road receiving 20 mm and the Ridge observing 25.2 mm.
The showers led to widespread waterlogging in crucial areas such as the Zakhira underpass, Ashram underpass, and the Lajpat Nagar flyover. Consequently, traffic movement was severely affected on major routes including Ashram, Kalkaji Temple, and Mathura Road.
While daytime temperatures dipped considerably, minimum temperatures remained above normal. Delhi's air quality index (AQI) saw a positive change, improving to 149 in the moderate category from 181 the previous day.
Meteorologists attributed the rainfall to a combination of a western disturbance and two cyclonic circulations affecting northwest India. The impact of these weather systems was expected to subside by Friday, October 18, 2026.
