Delhi Drenched: Hailstorm Greets City, Cools Temperatures
25 Oct
Summary
- Delhi experienced unseasonal rain and hailstorm, lowering the minimum temperature.
- The rainfall temporarily improved air quality to the moderate category.
- Hailstorms were reported in parts of central and south Delhi.
Early Sunday morning, Delhi experienced a significant weather shift with rainfall and hailstorms across various parts of the city. This event led to the minimum temperature dropping to 17 degrees Celsius, marking the coolest morning of the current season. The precipitation provided a temporary reprieve for Delhi's air quality, maintaining it in the moderate category for a second day.
The weather phenomenon, which occurred between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, included light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated hailstorms, particularly in central and south Delhi. Scientists attribute this to a weak western disturbance combined with moisture from the Arabian Sea. Several areas recorded rainfall, with Safdarjung logging 5.4 mm and Lodhi Road 5.8 mm.
Despite the brief improvement, air quality is predicted to return to poor levels on Monday. However, a light rainfall spell is anticipated again around October 29-30. Last year, October recorded a lowest minimum temperature of 15.8 degrees Celsius, while this October has already seen 61.9 mm of rainfall against a normal of 15.1 mm.
