Delhi Drenched: Rain Soaks Republic Day Rehearsal
24 Jan
Summary
- First seasonal rain brought relief from pollution, raising AQI.
- Republic Day parade rehearsal significantly disrupted by weather.
- Homeless individuals struggled with leaky shelters and wet belongings.

Rain and gusty winds lashed Delhi on Friday, marking the season's first rainfall and bringing a welcome drop in pollution levels. The city recorded 14.5 mm of rain, significantly improving air quality. However, the inclement weather caused considerable disruption.
The Republic Day parade's full-dress rehearsal on Kartavya Path was delayed, and the planned fly-past and cultural segments had to be canceled due to the downpour and overcast skies. Visitors who had gathered for the rehearsal found themselves seeking shelter.
The unseasonal weather also exacerbated conditions for the city's homeless population. Many sought refuge in temporary and permanent shelters, but faced issues like leaky tents, wet bedding, and shifted belongings due to strong winds. Shelter caretakers reported an increase in occupants and efforts to replace wet blankets and beds.
