Delhi Heat Breaks With Surprising Showers
31 May
Summary
- Delhi experienced relief from heat with gusty winds and rain.
- Pollution levels dropped significantly, marking the cleanest air in months.
- Temperatures are expected to rise again by June 4.

New Delhi experienced a welcome break from the May heat on Saturday, with gusty winds and afternoon showers bringing temperatures below normal. This change in weather also significantly improved air quality, marking the cleanest air day in over 230 days as the Air Quality Index dropped to 85.
The city saw rainfall ranging from trace amounts to 4mm in various parts. Weather alerts were issued for thunderstorms with winds up to 80 km/h in several districts. The relief is forecasted to be short-lived, with temperatures expected to climb back to 40°C-42°C by June 4.
Experts attribute the rain to a western disturbance. May 2024 was noted as one of the hottest in at least 13 years, with six consecutive heatwave days at the end of the month. Despite this, the overall rainfall for May was lower than normal.
