Delhi is currently enduring a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching nearly 43 degrees Celsius in various locations on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the mercury will climb even higher over the next two days.
Isolated pockets within the capital could experience temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius. Consequently, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. The forecast indicates maximum temperatures will likely remain between 43°C and 45°C, with minimum temperatures hovering around 26.3°C.
This intense heat spell is not isolated to Delhi, as large parts of northwest and central India are also experiencing similar conditions. The weather department anticipates clear skies accompanied by strong surface winds, potentially gusting up to 40 kmph during the day.
A heatwave is formally declared by the IMD when temperatures are at least 6.5°C above normal for two consecutive days at a minimum of two stations within a meteorological subdivision. The formal declaration is issued on the second day of such conditions.
