Delhi Swelters: Warmest Nights Signal Intense Heat Ahead
23 Apr
Summary
- Temperatures soar, with the Ridge recording 43 degrees Celsius.
- Nights offer little respite, marking the warmest spell of the season.
- Heatwave conditions are not yet officially declared by IMD.

Delhi is currently grappling with a sharp increase in daytime temperatures, with several weather stations reporting highs significantly above normal. The Ridge was the hottest at 43 degrees Celsius, a substantial 4.6 degrees above its usual temperature. Palam, Lodhi Road, and Ayanagar also recorded high daytime temperatures, with readings exceeding 41 degrees Celsius.
Nights have provided minimal relief, contributing to the warmest night spell of the season observed to date. Safdarjung registered a minimum temperature of 25.4 degrees Celsius, with other stations reporting similar conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that official heatwave conditions have not yet been declared, as the criteria require at least two stations to meet heatwave thresholds for two consecutive days.
The IMD defines a heatwave when maximum temperatures surpass 40 degrees Celsius and are 4.5 to 6.4 degrees above normal. Current forecasts indicate that heatwave conditions are expected over the next two days. However, some relief is anticipated on April 26, with predictions of partly cloudy skies and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. The air quality remains in the 'moderate' category, with the Air Quality Index recorded at 176.
