Delhi Deluged: Intense Downpour Catches City by Surprise
29 Jul
Summary
- Delhi hit by heavy to very heavy rain, exceeding monthly average
- Rainfall measured up to 129.8mm, causing widespread waterlogging
- Monsoon trough and low-pressure area brought additional moisture

This past Tuesday, the city of Delhi was hit by a severe monsoon downpour, with the Ridge weather station recording an astonishing 129.8mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. The heavy showers took the city by surprise, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had only forecast moderate rain for the day.
The intense precipitation on Tuesday pushed the monthly rainfall for July beyond the normal, with Delhi logging 220.2mm during the month, surpassing the long-period monthly average of 209.7mm. The base station at Safdarjung recorded 68.1mm of rainfall, while Lodhi Road experienced 72.2mm.
According to weather officials, the monsoon trough passing close to Delhi-NCR and a low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining northeast Rajasthan were the primary factors behind the heavy downpour. The moisture level in the region spiked, leading to the significant precipitation that caught the city unprepared, causing widespread traffic snarls and waterlogging.
With the conditions likely to remain the same over the next few days, the IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday as well. The heavy showers on Tuesday brought the daytime temperature down by six degrees, with the maximum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung base station at 29.1 degrees Celsius, the lowest since July 8.
