Delhi Shivers: Rain, Fog Trigger Yellow Alert
9 Jan
Summary
- Delhi faces intense cold wave with minimum temperature at 5.8°C.
- Dense fog causes visibility below 100m in parts of NCR.
- Air quality remains severe, with Ghaziabad at AQI 424.

A biting chill has gripped the national capital, Delhi, on Friday, January 9, 2026, following early morning light rain. The mercury has plummeted, intensifying a cold wave that has residents seeking refuge from the harsh weather. The India Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for the region, citing dense fog and persistent cold-day conditions.
The minimum temperature at the Safdarjung Observatory dropped to 5.8°C, significantly below the seasonal average. High humidity combined with winds of 13 kmph has further lowered the perceived temperature, while dense fog reduced visibility to under 100 meters in areas like Palam.
Despite the rain, Delhi's air quality remains a serious concern, with most stations reporting 'Very Poor to Severe' conditions. Pollutants are trapped near the ground due to stagnant cold air and water vapor, creating a thick smog layer, particularly noticeable in Ghaziabad with an AQI of 424. The IMD forecasts the Yellow Alert for fog to continue for another 48 hours, with no major changes expected in minimum temperatures.
