Delhi Air Quality Plummets: Poor AQI Returns, Flights Delayed
4 Jan
Summary
- Delhi's air quality worsened to 298, nearing the 'poor' category.
- Over 170 flights were delayed at Delhi airport due to weather disruptions.
- Minimum temperature dropped to 7.4°C, significantly below normal.

New Delhi experienced a significant decline in air quality on Sunday morning, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) climbing to 298. This measure places the city's air in the 'poor' category, a stark contrast to the improvements seen earlier in the week. The deterioration has prompted forecasts of continued 'very poor' air quality for the coming days.
The adverse weather conditions, including moderate fog, impacted transportation, leading to over 170 flight delays at Delhi airport. While visibility remained relatively unaffected in the capital, disruptions occurred across northern India, influencing flight schedules. Air traffic management considers conditions at both origin and destination cities before making cancellation decisions.
Adding to the challenging conditions, the minimum temperature on Sunday morning dropped to 7.4°C, 0.5°C below the seasonal normal. This dip in temperature, influenced by cold northwesterly winds, follows a Saturday where the minimum temperature was recorded at 8.1°C. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 17-19°C.
