Deadly Hurricane Melissa Slams Caribbean, Heads Toward Bahamas

On October 30, 2025, Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category 2 storm, continues to wreak havoc across the Caribbean. The hurricane first made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday and then struck Cuba early Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
As of 2 p.m. ET on October 30th, Melissa remains a dangerous hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. The storm is currently located around 110 miles south-southeast of the central Bahamas, moving northeast at 15 mph. Authorities warn that the core of Melissa is expected to move across the southeastern or central Bahamas this afternoon and evening, and then pass near or to the west of Bermuda late Thursday and Thursday night.
The hurricane has already been blamed for at least 49 deaths across Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. In Jamaica, at least eight people have been reported dead, including an infant. In Haiti, the mayor of Petit-Goâve said at least 20 people died after the banks of the La Digue river burst and flooded nearby homes. At least one person has also been killed in the Dominican Republic.
Meteorologists warn that the heavy rainfall from Melissa will cause life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flash flooding with numerous landslides in eastern Cuba. Storm surge of 4 to 7 feet above normally dry ground is also possible in the southeastern Bahamas today, with minor coastal flooding expected in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
As Melissa continues its northward trek, authorities in the Bahamas and Bermuda are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for the storm's potential impact.
