Narelle: First Cyclone in 20 Years to Hit 3 States
22 Mar
Summary
- Tropical Cyclone Narelle has weakened to a category-two system.
- It is currently moving towards already sodden Top End communities.
- Narelle is the first cyclone in over two decades to target three states.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle has been downgraded to a category-two system following its second landfall in northern Australia. The cyclone crossed the coast at Cape Shield in eastern Arnhem Land on Sunday morning, still generating wind gusts as high as 130km/h.
Narelle is now tracking towards the Top End communities, which are already dealing with saturated conditions from previous rainfall. This unique weather event is significant as it is the first cyclone in more than twenty years anticipated to affect three different states and territories.
The weakening of Narelle to a category-two system does not diminish the threat to affected regions, particularly those in the Top End that have experienced recent heavy weather. Authorities are monitoring its path closely.
