Heavy rainfall is currently impacting far north Queensland as Tropical Cyclone Koji approaches the coast. The storm is expected to cross land between Townsville and Bowen on Sunday morning, bringing significant weather events. Coastal communities from Townsville to Mackay are under warnings, with intense rainfall and wind gusts of up to 120km/h anticipated.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding, especially in areas already saturated from previous rains. Over 200mm of rain has already fallen west of Mackay. The Queensland Premier has praised community preparedness, noting that emergency services are in position and ready to assist residents.
Following landfall, the cyclone is forecast to weaken rapidly as it moves inland. Meanwhile, in the northwest, major flooding continues along the Flinders River, impacting gulf country communities and causing projected significant livestock losses. Emergency services are on standby for the impending event.
