Columbus Opens Cooling Centers Early Amid Heat Dome
30 Jun
Summary
- Cooling centers open June 30, two days earlier than planned.
- City pools offer extended hours and free admission during heat wave.
- Temperatures expected in the 90s with 'feels like' over 100 degrees.

In response to a "heat dome" settling over central Ohio, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department has moved up the opening of its cooling centers to June 30, two days ahead of the original July 2 date. These centers, located at five city recreation facilities, will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Complementing the cooling centers, the city's seven outdoor pools are also extending their hours to 8 p.m. and will offer free admission throughout the anticipated heat wave. Forecasters predict temperatures soaring into the 90s, with "feels like" temperatures potentially exceeding 100 degrees due to high humidity.
Residents are advised to consult the Columbus Recreation and Parks website before visiting pools, as capacity limits may be enforced. The early opening of cooling centers reflects the urgent need for public respite from the approaching extreme heat.
