Colorado Winds Topple Trucks, Shut Down Major Interstates
13 Mar
Summary
- High winds caused multiple road closures on I-70 and I-25.
- Several semitrailers overturned, leading to injuries and fuel leaks.
- Low soil moisture from a dry winter exacerbates blowing dust and visibility issues.

High winds significantly impacted Colorado roadways on Thursday, leading to multiple closures of major routes including Interstates 70 and 25. The powerful gusts, with speeds reaching up to 80 mph by mid-morning, caused several semitrailers to overturn. These incidents resulted in injuries, including one driver hospitalized, and fuel leaks, necessitating significant traffic diversions. Highway 93 also experienced closures due to overturned trucks, downed power lines, and low visibility caused by dust. Northbound Highway 287 was temporarily closed because of downed power lines and fire, with evacuations near Fort Collins being lifted later. The low soil moisture, attributed to a historic dry and warm winter, is exacerbating the issue by creating large dust clouds that impair visibility and pose health concerns. This phenomenon is similar to previous wind events this year, including a multi-vehicle crash on February 17 that resulted in four fatalities due to 'brown out' conditions. Airport travel was also affected, with hundreds of flights delayed due to ground delays. Road condition information and maps are available on CDOT's COtrip tool.
