Colorado Mountains Brace for Unexpected Snowfall
14 Oct
Summary
- Up to 12 inches of snow forecast for Colorado mountains above 9,000 feet.
- Winter weather advisories are in effect from Wednesday morning into Thursday.
- Colorado's Traction Law requires specific tire tread for vehicles on I-70.

Colorado's high mountain passes are anticipating significant snowfall, with winter weather advisories issued by the National Weather Service. Areas above 9,000 feet are expected to receive between 6 and 12 inches of snow from Wednesday morning into Thursday. This late-season snowfall follows an unseasonably warm and dry start to autumn. Several mountain passes, including Berthoud, Cameron, Willow Creek, Rabbit Ears, Wolf Creek, and Vail Pass, are predicted to experience hazardous travel conditions, with potential for slushy and icy roads.
The Passenger Vehicle Traction Law has been active on I-70 since September 1, mandating a minimum tire tread depth of 3/16 inch for all vehicles. All-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles must have M+S rated tires, while two-wheel drive vehicles may require chains or alternative traction devices. Fines for non-compliance range from $50 to up to $1,000 for vehicles that become stuck and block traffic. Meteorologists note that warmer temperatures expected over the weekend may cause this snow to melt.
