Coastal Georgia and Carolinas Brace for Potential Hurricane Imelda
27 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Low-category hurricane Imelda may reach Georgia and Carolinas next week
- Savannah residents can pick up sandbags this weekend for potential flooding
- Tornadoes, high winds, and heavy rainfall expected along the coast
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a low-category hurricane, soon to be named Imelda, may reach coastal Georgia and the Carolinas early next week. The storm, currently known as Potential Tropical Cyclone 9, is expected to organize into a cyclone over the weekend and bring stormy weather to the Bahamas.
As the system reaches hurricane strength early next week, coastlines from Georgia to the southern mid-Atlantic states can expect a surge of flooding, high surf, rip currents, beach erosion, heavy rainfall, and high winds. Tornadoes are also possible, the NWS forecast.
In preparation, the City of Savannah has entered Operating Condition 4, the monitoring phase. Savannah residents and businesses can pick up sand and sandbags on Saturday and Sunday, September 27-28, while supplies last. The NWS has urged residents to ensure they have their hurricane plan in place.
The National Weather Service is closely monitoring the situation, but there is still uncertainty about the exact path and intensity of the storm. Residents in the affected areas should stay vigilant and follow the guidance of local authorities.
